Deadpool was unquestionably one of the biggest hits of 2016. But now we’re learning we need to thank Blake Lively for it happening at all.
Ryan Reynolds has opened up in recent interviews about his struggles with anxiety, particularly related to last year’s Deadpool release, and how his wife has been his rock throughout.
As if they couldn’t be more perfect as a family – they welcomed their second child, Ines, three months ago – it now turns out that Reynolds goes to his wife whenever he’s feeling vulnerable. Which only makes them more adorable.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Reynolds described the nerves leading up to Deadpool’s release. “By the time we were in post[-production], we’d been to Comic-Con, and people went crazy for it," he said in the interview. "The expectations were eating me alive."
And who’d he turn to? “Blake helped me through that. I’m lucky to have her around just to keep me sane."
It wasn’t just pre-release that had Reynolds wringing his hands. He apparently was so nervous about taking on the role, he almost turned down the part.
“There was a minute where I even thought, 'Maybe I shouldn't do the movie,' because it had been this thing with such a build-up," Reynolds announced at the Critics Choice Awards. "And she was the one that said, 'You gotta do it. You absolutely have to do it. It's your dream role. The role you're meant to play. So you've got to get up there and do it.’ She's been epic for me in every way."
Thank God for Blake. Deadpool somehow managed to supersede even the wildly-high expectations for it and became the #1 R-rated movie of all time. The smash hit already has a sequel underway, and Reynolds is finally the superhero he was born to be -- all thanks to his wifey.
