If we took a poll  about the amount of women who have sex while on their period, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s way more than you'd think. (feel free to leave your vote in the comments section, if you’d like.) It might not be a topic that a lot of ladies talk about, but some of us can’t imagine going a week without gettin’ some. And according to many physicians, “period sex” has some health benefits.

For starters, when you have an orgasm, it helps to release oxytocin and dopamine into your system. That not only helps to make you happier, but it can also alleviate cramping. Also, since orgasms help your uterus to contract and contractions help to remove more of the blood from your uterus, period sex can actually shorten the length of your period. Then there’s the no brainer: lubrication certainly isn’t necessary. (It may be a little gross to think about, but it's true!)

But this isn’t really about all of the reasons why you should have sex when you’re menstruating. This is about an invention that kinda tripped us out. There's a start-up called The Flex Company that recently raised one million bucks. To do what? To distribute a “unique disposable disc” that’s similar to a menstrual cup. Apparently, you can wear it for up to 12-hours without any leaks (we’re already sold!) and (what?!) you can even keep it in while you’re having sex!

Click here if you want to read more about it. Report back if you ever get around to testing it out. In the meantime, while you’re waiting for this super sex invention to come out on the market, whether it’s your first or 100th time, here are some tips on how to make period sex better and less messy.

Avoid The Heavy Flow Days

For all of you who’ve never had sex while on your period, it might be because the thought of doing it on the first or second day of your period is totally stressing you out. That’s understandable. Your flow is usually the heaviest then. Another thing is you're usually cramping a lot and feeling bloated. Usually all you want to do is take some ibuprofen and call it a day.

However, as you ease into Day 3 things should start looking up. If you’re not changing your pad or tampon every couple of hours and your energy levels are coming back, consider having sex then. See how you feel. It might not be as “scary” as you initially thought.

Enjoy The Shower

Sex in the shower is ALWAYS going to be sexy. It doesn’t matter what time of the month it is! A huge perk of having it during your cycle is that you can stay wet and clean simultaneously. Plus, the warm water can soothe you if you do have any additional aching or cramping going on.

Put A Towel Down

Hopefully this point is a given. Just because we’re explaining how to have sex while “Aunt Flo” is in town, that doesn’t mean you need to act like she totally doesn’t exist. It would be a shame to ruin your bedding (or carpet) every month in the heat of the moment. Make sure to put a towel or two down. If any blood does get on your fabrics, click here for some tips on how to (hopefully) get it all out.

Where’s The Condom?

If your man is freaking out about the thought of having sex while you’re bleeding, he can always put a condom on. Come to think of it, if you’re not on some other form of birth control, he should. Contrary to popular belief, although it’s not quite as common, there is a chance that you can get pregnant while you’re on your period. That’s because sometimes ovulation overlaps with menstrual cycles, especially if you don’t have regular periods. It would be a real trip to get pregnant on your period. A rubber can avoid that.

Remember There Are Other "Options”

Let’s not forget that there are other ways to get off... you get what we’re saying? If after reading this, you (or he) are still pretty squeamish at the very thought of vaginal period sex, this is a great time to get in touch with each other’s OTHER erogenous zones. Click here for a list of yours and here for a list of his. Have fun!
